Rolec Evo EV Charger Review UK (2026)

Quick Verdict

The Rolec Evo is a strong all-rounder for UK home charging. It is designed and built in Britain, carries a 5-year warranty, includes PME fault detection as standard, and won a Red Dot Award for product design in 2024. At £374.99, with solar modes, a modular installation system, and a CT clamp in the box, it competes well above its price point.

Build Quality and Design

The Evo is square: 260 x 260 x 112mm, sitting flush against the wall. The housing is PC/ABS alloy, UL94-V0 fire rated, with an aluminium heat sink inside. IK10 impact protection covers the knocks a wall-mounted charger picks up over years of use. At under 3kg, one person can manage it without help.

It is IP54 rated, meaning dust-protected and splash-resistant from any direction. That covers a sheltered exterior wall, a garage, or a carport without issue. The finish is clean and deliberately minimal, which is what won it the Red Dot Award in 2024 — a product design prize that typically goes to products that look like they belong in the space, not bolted onto it.

The Evo is manufactured in the UK by Rolec Services, a company that has built EV charging equipment since 2010. That matters for lead times, warranty fulfilment, and the availability of replacement parts over the life of the unit.

Installation

The Evo uses a three-part modular structure: a base plate, a click-in charge module, and a front cover. The base goes on the wall first, then the module clicks in, then the cover locks on. Rolec quotes under 15 minutes for a straightforward job once the circuit is in place. That is not a marketing figure — installers consistently report it holds up in the field.

Built-in PME fault detection removes the need to drive an earth electrode into the ground on most UK supplies. PME earthing covers the majority of UK homes, and without built-in protection, OZEV guidelines require an earth rod to be installed. The Evo handles this internally on compliant PME supplies, so no groundworks are needed.

The unit also includes built-in AC 30mA Type A RCD protection combined with a DC 6mA detector. Together these provide the same protective coverage as a standalone Type B RCD, so no separate external device is needed in most cases. The CT clamp for dynamic load balancing ships in the box, which removes the need for a separate order or a return visit.

You still need a certified OZEV-approved electrician. The unit takes a dedicated 40A MCB on its own circuit. Most installations run 2 to 4 hours including commissioning.

Charging Speed

At 7.4kW the Evo delivers the maximum charge speed a standard UK single-phase supply can handle. A 75kWh battery, as found in a Volkswagen ID.4 or Kia EV6, charges from near-empty overnight in around 10 hours. A 40kWh battery, as in the Nissan Leaf or Mini Electric, takes around 6 hours.

Dynamic load balancing comes as standard with the CT clamp included. If the supply circuit shares headroom with other appliances, the Evo adjusts its draw in real time to stay within limits, rather than tripping the main breaker.

Solar Charging Modes

The Evo supports two solar modes alongside a standard charge mode, controlled through the Rolec Evo app.

ECO mode blends grid power and available solar output. On overcast days or when solar generation falls short of the minimum charge current, the car still charges at a reduced rate using the grid as a baseline.

ECO+ mode waits for enough surplus solar generation before starting a session, then tracks output as conditions change through the day. The adjustable current range lets the charger follow generation levels without repeatedly stopping and restarting.

Charge Now bypasses solar logic and draws maximum grid power immediately. Useful when the car needs charging quickly regardless of generation.

App and Smart Features

The free Rolec Evo app covers scheduling, session history, remote start and stop, charge limits, and fault notifications. Two RFID cards ship with the unit, so access control is available from day one without extra hardware. That suits households with more than one driver or anyone who wants to prevent unauthorised use.

The 7kW model connects via Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth. The OCPP 1.6 protocol opens the unit to third-party back-office systems, useful in small workplace or fleet settings where centralised reporting matters.

For smart tariff scheduling, the app supports time-of-use scheduling aligned to off-peak windows such as Octopus Go. Note that Octopus Intelligent Go requires direct API integration between the charger and Octopus — the Evo uses app-based scheduling rather than a direct API link, so Intelligent Go's automatic dispatch features are not available. Manual scheduling on Octopus Go works well.

Key Benefits

  • Designed and manufactured in the UK by Rolec Services
  • 5-year manufacturer warranty — longer than most competitors
  • Built-in PME fault detection removes the need for an earth electrode on most PME supplies
  • Built-in AC RCD + DC 6mA protection — no external Type B RCD required in most cases
  • CT clamp for dynamic load balancing included in the box
  • Modular three-part design — under 15-minute installation once the circuit is live
  • Two RFID cards included for access control
  • Solar diversion via ECO and ECO+ modes
  • OCPP 1.6 for third-party platform integration
  • OZEV approved for up to £500 off installation
  • Red Dot Award winner 2024

Things to Consider

  • Socketed (untethered) only — no tethered cable variant available
  • 4G connectivity is only available on the 22kW model, not the 7kW
  • Octopus Intelligent Go requires direct API integration; the Evo uses app-based scheduling instead
  • No V2G (vehicle-to-grid) support
  • IP54 on both variants — some competitors offer IP65

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Rolec Evo OZEV approved?

Yes. It qualifies for the EV Chargepoint Grant, covering up to £500 off a home installation by a certified OZEV-approved installer.

Does the Rolec Evo need a separate Type B RCD?

Not in most cases. The Evo includes a built-in AC 30mA Type A RCD combined with a DC 6mA detector, which together provide the required protection for EV charging without a separate external Type B device. Your installer will confirm whether your specific installation requires anything additional.

Does it need an earth rod?

Not on most UK supplies. Built-in PME fault detection handles the protection required on PME earthed supplies, so no earth electrode needs to be driven into the ground. This removes one of the most common added costs in a standard domestic EV charger installation.

Is it compatible with Octopus Intelligent Go?

Not via direct API. The Evo uses app-based scheduling, which works well with fixed off-peak windows like Octopus Go. Octopus Intelligent Go's automatic dispatch features require a direct charger-to-Octopus API link that the Evo does not currently support.

Can it charge using solar power?

Yes. ECO mode blends grid and solar to keep charging when cloud cover limits generation. ECO+ mode waits for sufficient surplus solar output before starting, then adjusts as conditions change. A compatible solar inverter or energy monitor is needed to pass generation data to the charger.

Where is the Rolec Evo made?

In the UK. Rolec Services is based in Boston, Lincolnshire, and has manufactured EV charging equipment in Britain since 2010.

What is the warranty on the Rolec Evo?

5 years — one of the longest manufacturer warranties on a home EV charger in the UK market.
