Ohme Home Pro vs Ohme ePod: Tethered or Untethered, Which Do You Need?

ON-EV
Ohme Home Pro vs Ohme ePod: Tethered or Untethered, Which Do You Need?

The Short Answer

The Ohme Home Pro and Ohme ePod share the same smart tariff intelligence, built-in 4G SIM and Intelligent Octopus Go integration. The difference is form factor: the Home Pro is a tethered 5m or 8m cable unit with an LCD screen, from £532. The ePod is a smaller, untethered socket unit with no screen, from £498, and you supply your own Type 2 cable. Choose the Home Pro for an all-in-one unit, the ePod if you own a cable or run more than one EV.

Tethered vs Untethered

The Home Pro's 5m or 8m Type 2 cable is fixed to the unit, so there's nothing extra to buy or store. The ePod is a socket only. You connect your own Type 2 cable each time you charge. That suits drivers who own a cable already, or households running more than one EV with different connector needs.

Screen vs No Screen

The Home Pro's LCD shows live charging data, current tariff rate, session cost and energy delivered without opening the app. The ePod has no screen, so checking session status means using the Ohme app. Both run the same smart tariff intelligence. The difference is how you view it day to day.

Size, Weight and Cable Security

The ePod weighs 1.5kg against the Home Pro's 4kg, and its footprint is smaller in two dimensions, which makes it easier to fit into a tight wall space. The ePod's socket has no cable lock. On a shared or publicly accessible driveway, anyone can unplug the cable mid-session. The Home Pro's fixed cable avoids that risk, since there's no connector to remove at the wall end.

Weatherproofing

IP55 versus IP54 is a small gap in practice. Both suit a standard UK outdoor wall position. Neither reaches the IP66 rating of a unit like the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro, so a fully exposed, unsheltered wall favours a higher-rated charger over either Ohme model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the Home Pro and ePod use the same app and tariff intelligence?

Yes. Both run the same smart tariff integration, including native Intelligent Octopus Go support for vehicles not on Ohme's compatibility list.

Does the ePod come with a cable?

No. It is a socketed unit, so you need a separate Type 2 charging cable.

Which one is cheaper?

The Ohme ePod, from £498 versus £532 for the Home Pro at the 5m cable length.

Is the ePod less secure than the Home Pro?

The ePod's socket has no cable lock, so the cable can be unplugged mid-session. That matters more on a shared or publicly accessible driveway than a private one.

Do both qualify for the OZEV grant?

Yes, both are OZEV approved and qualify for the UK EV Chargepoint Grant where eligible.
